Benchmark preamplifiers are designed to accept and deliver studio-level balanced output signals, but they also deliver state-of-the-art performance when operating at HiFi signal levels which are typically 10 dB lower.

The LA4 and HPA4 feature 30-step relay-controlled input gain stages that drive 256-step relay-controlled attenuators.

At all volume settings, the LA4 and HPA4 optimize the gain structure between the source device (DAC or phono preamp) and the destination device (power amplifier or headphone amplifier). This gain optimization functions seamlessly with any mix of HiFi and studio components. It also optimizes the gain structure between any mix of balanced and unbalanced interfaces.

The volume control is the weakest point in many audio systems, but the LA4 and HPA4 eliminate this weak point. Each volume setting is determined by pairs of relay-selected high-precision resistors. Benchmark's LA4 and HPA4 provide the very best analog volume control system available at any price point. With this unique gain and attenuation system, the noise performance is optimized at each volume setting.

The DAC3 HGC and DAC3 L feature Benchmark's Hybrid Gain Control (HGC). Analog inputs are controlled by a conventional analog potentiometer while digital inputs are controlled by a digital signal processor (DSP). The HGC offers a cost-effective yet high-performance alternative to the LA4 and HPA4.
