AHB2 - Bridged Mono or Stereo Mode?

Updated on

Bridged Mono Mode Delivers:

  • Almost 4 times the power
  • 6 dB higher output
  • The ability to use shorter speaker cables
  • Very loud playback capability (typically 116 dB SPL)

Stereo Mode is Better When:

  • Cost is an issue
  • Speakers are not rated for high power
  • Listening room is small
  • Loud playback (typically at 110 dB SPL) is more than enough

In Either Mode:

  • Noise will be 15 to 17 dB below the threshold of hearing
  • Amplifier THD+N will be below the threshold of hearing over the entire power range
  • Sound quality will be identical at every power level up to 100W

The AHB2 excels at staying clean when driving low impedances and difficult phase angles. The reason for this is the feed-forward error correction. If the load drops below 1 Ohm at full output, you can reach the maximum available current and you will see the TEMP lights flash to warn you that you are near the limit. The output is still clean unless the CLIP lights also light up. If you go below one Ohm, the protection system may shut the amplifier down to protect the amplifier and your speakers.

We have many customers that have the Revel Salon Ultima 2 speakers, and most are running them with the AHB2 in bridged mono. We teamed up with Revel at one show in Denver and we were driving 5 Salons in bridged mono in a large room as part of a 5.2 system.

Great video, I heard the abh2 at the Florida show earlier this year, very impressive sound
particularly in low frequency production would certainly agree with the transparency description.
I am very interested in purchasing your amplifier. Could you say something about its performance at 2 ohms.

I have Revel Salon Ultima 2 speakers, and currently have two Parasound JC-1 amps in bridged mono.
I’m very interested in switching to Benchmark AHB2’s, but don’t know if I need to b
get two for bridged mono or whether one amp in stereo (at 100w?) would be sufficient.
Thoughts?
